In any given year, over one-third of the population experiences new onset or acute insomnia. Similarly, it's predicted that about 10% of the population agrees that sleep beginning and maintenance issues are compatible with chronic insomnia diagnostic criteria. Acute and chronic insomnia have been regarded variations of the same ailment or disorder for decades, with the only major distinction being the duration of symptoms (days/weeks versus months). The question of whether acute and chronic insomnia are related is an important one that has yet to be answered empirically.
